The totem poles creator
THE PIECE, WHICH WAS AS TALL AS A GIRAFFE, WAS BY ME, DEB REEVES
I AM A WALKING PAINT PALLET IN TOWN THAT WANTED TO DO SOMETHING BIG FOR MY COMMUNITY
DICK HOFFMAN WAS IMPORTANT TO THE VILLAGE OF SAUGATUCK
HIS JOB WAS TO DO SOMETHING TO DRAW THE ATTENTION OF THE TOURISTS, WHICH LED TO ME
SEE, DICK HOFFMAN WAS THE TOP DOG IN THE VILLAGE OF SAUGATUCK
HE AND HIS WIFE BOTH OWNED THE ISLAND QUEEN
WHICH WAS LIKE THE PRESENT DAY STAR OF SAUGATUCK
THE PIECE I MADE WAS BUILT IN A HOUSE BARN, MOST LIKELY HOFFMAN’S
I CREATED A TOTEM POLE THAT WAS CONSTRUCTED MOUND OUR TOWN IN THE 1960’S.
INSTEAD OF OTHER CREEPY ANIMALS, I MADE IT WITH CARTOON-LIKE ANIMALS
THE STATUE BROUGHT MANY TOURISTS TO SAUGATUCK
MANY PICTURES WERE SNAPPED IN FRONT OF MY PIECE
THE STATUE WAS DISPLAYED RIGHT WHERE THE BIG ARTIST PALETTE IS LOCATED NOW
RIGHT BY THE ENTRANCE OF SAUGATUCK, HOPEFULLY TO DRAW MORE ATTENTION
THE TOTEM POLE BROUGHT MANY PEOPLE TO SAUGATUCK BECAUSE OF IT’S DIVERSITY
BECAUSE OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE BROUGHT INTO IT
SADLY, THE TOTEM POLE WAS TAKEN DOWN AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME
BECAUSE A STORM’S TEARS MADE IT FALL, WHICH LANDED WITH A THUD ON THE ROAD
THE CITY DECIDED TO TAKE IT DOWN BECAUSE IT WAS A DANGER TO PEOPLE
SO THE TOTEM POLE WAS DONATED TO THE COMMERCE SOCIETY, SOON TO THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
THE STATUE NOW STANDS FRESHLY PAINTED, STANDING STRAIGHT, THE PIECE IS A STRONG SOLDIER
WHERE IT STILL CAN BE SEEN BY PEOPLE IN A GARDEN IN THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
I AM SO GLAD THAT MY PIECE DIDN’T GET DESTROYED
AT LEAST MY TOWN STILL HAS A MEMORY OF ME, AND A LITTLE BIT OF THE PAST

The historical totem pole
The grand totem pole
is a historical piece
of our little town
The town Saugatuck
Our town is packed with tourists
which drew attention
around the small town,
The piece drew attention there
like a big magnet
A couple were buzzed
Both Debbie and Dick Hoffman
Dick, a business man
Dick had a grand plan
Something to grab someone’s eye
Then the totem pole
Made 1960
By local Deb Reeves
A well known artist
Set right in center
So everyone could see it
Drew much attention
It was a giraffe
It stuck out like a sore thumb
It was so massive
Everyone liked it
Many pictures were taken
All good memories
Seemed like forever
But it soon got taken down
It was a danger
It soon fell over
A hurricane-rain occurred
It was taken down
It was donated
Moved to a place where it sat
It sat forever
Until two men came
They saved the big skyscraper
Donated again
Now a special place
A safe haven for old things
A special garden
Where it can be seen
By everyone that passed it
Where it’s still cherished

It's just me , the totem pole
I think of myself as an important symbol or a token of our town,
as attention attractor in the town of Saugatuck, most importantly, downtown
I was built by a very nice woman by the named of Deb Reeves,
though before she made me, I was misconceived
During the process of creating me, I was slashed, cut and hacked,
hen to finish me off, I was nailed, glued, and stacked
My structure is made entirely out of Alice and Wonderland type animals
I was loved by everyone that saw me, faces full of delight, very affable
I was like a lion at a zoo, out front and center so everyone could see
It was so nerve racking, but there was no way I could flee
Adults and kids all sizes would come and take pictures with me
No one would ever climb on me though, If so then I would plea
I was loved by everyone that would pass through and by,
but soon a horror would occur to me, coming from the tears of the sky
I was taken down because I became a danger to the townspeople
Apparently because of my falling, I was considered “evil”
My figure was moved to the Chamber of Commerce, a little white building
Then I ended up in an abandoned garage all by myself, very thrilling
Henry and Bruce Gleason were my knights in shining armor
They saved me before I was destroyed and my past would be darker
I was then donated to the Historical Society to be displayed in their garden,
I was glad though that I still have my life and future hearten
